Truth or Scare?

Fake News Is Manipulative News

Fake news refers to false stories that appear to be legitimate news, typically spread via the internet or other media to influence political views or for profit.  The term is complex and often politicized, distinct from misinformation (false info shared without intent to deceive) and disinformation (false info deliberately spread to mislead).

Key aspects include:

  • Intent and Origin: Created by partisan actors for political gain, clickbait farms for ad revenue, state propaganda, or satirists (e.g., The Onion).
  • Spread Mechanisms: Proliferates rapidly through social media, bots, and AI-generated content, often designed to provoke emotional responses.
  • Detection Challenges: A 2024 MIT/Columbia study found that 50% of people were uncertain when asked to distinguish between a fake and a real news story

Fake News is not innocent. Nearly always it’s intended to manipulate reader opinions through deception.
