President Donald Trump said that he was mulling a reduction of US troops in Germany following Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s saying Iran had humiliated the US.
“The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday.
Trump has also claimed that the war is benefiting Germany by preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. However, multiple top members of his administration have confirmed that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been destroyed during Operation Midnight Hammer in June.

The President’s statement followed Merz’s criticism of Trump’s war against Iran. “The Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating, or rather, very skilful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result,” the German leader said Monday. “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards. And so I hope that this ends as quickly as possible.”
Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House was considering a proposal to close a base in either Spain or Germany to “punish” the countries over their opposition to the US war against Iran.
Washington’s European allies were upset by Trump’s decision to attack Iran without informing them first. Spain and Italy have responded by closing their airspace to US military aircraft conducting operations against Iran in the Middle East.
The proposal Trump is considering would reposition troops in Eastern European nations, possibly in Poland or Lithuania. The US currently has 36,000 troops in Germany. Moving thousands of soldiers closer to Russia’s border could further escalate NATO’s tensions with Moscow.
