New York lawmakers are considering a bill that would require companies with net income of $5 million or more to reduce or eliminate plastic packaging. Supporters say the bill would help fight pollution, reduce waste, and make large companies pay more of the cost of recycling instead of taxpayers. But grocery stores, packaging companies, and other business groups warn the changes could raise prices on common products like toilet paper, diapers, and paper towels because alternative packaging may cost more and protect products less effectively. Critics also say the bill could lead to damaged goods, supply problems, and higher costs for…

Image by Getty and Unsplash+. This week in the Anthropocene We often laud China for its boom in renewable energy projects, but seem to ignore the fact that it’s still building coal-fired power plants at a faster pace than any other country. Experts are questioning whether China’s gains in green energy will be clouded by the black smoke billowing from its robust fleet of coal plants. Air pollution in China kills 2 million a year. On the topic of China’s “green” energy boom, it’s also important to note that many of the critical mineral operations key to its renewable projects…

In the second major announcement from the White House anti-fraud task force, Vice President JD Vance revealed that the administration has forcibly closed roughly 800 hospice and home health care centers in California and is deferring $1.3 billion in Medicaid reimbursements to the state. Additionally, the task force is sending a letter to all 50 statewide Medicaid and Medicare systems warning them to boost anti-fraud efforts or risk losing federal funding. The vice president said the deferrals are due in part to providers prescribing unnecessary medications to benefit from federal programs. “We want to ensure that the American taxpayer isn’t getting fleeced,” Vance said from the Eisenhower…

Pausing the 18-cents-per-gallon federal gas tax will barely make a dent in the surge in costs since the war in Iran began. Source link

Demolition Noir, Studio City, California. Photo: Jeffrey St. Clair “Any war that requires the suspension of reason as a necessity for support is a bad war.” – Norman Mailer + I don’t always read Heather Cox Richardson (because, frankly, one can hardly keep up with her, given that dishes need to be washed, the grass needs to be cut, the dog needs to be walked, a baseball game needs to be watched), but this pretty accurately sums up the current mental state of the person running our country… Over the course of three hours last night, he posted on social…
“I care about results,” AOC told an audience on Friday. This was a lie. She doesn’t seem to care about results, at least based on what else she said. When asked by a student at the University of Chicago about working across the aisle with Republicans, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said, drawing a line, “I personally do not trust someone like Marjorie Taylor Greene, a proven bigot and antisemite, on the issues of what is good for Gazans and Israelis.” To note, the former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been a staunch and vocal opponent of the U.S. funding…
