Trump to Meet with National Security Team to Discuss Restarting Strikes in Iran

President Donald Trump will meet with his team on Monday to discuss restarting the war against Iran.

Axios reported on Monday that three US officials said the President will gather with his top national security advisers to determine how Washington will move forward in the war against Iran. On Sunday, Trump rejected Iran’s peace proposal, calling it “totally unacceptable.”

In remarks at the White House, the President declared the month-old ceasefire with Iran was on life support. When asked about the truce by a reporter in the Oval Office, Trump said, “It’s weak, it’s unbelievably weak.” He added, “I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support. The doctor would give it 1% at living.”

Two of the US officials who spoke with Axios believe the President will choose to restart the war against Iran. “He will tune them up a bit,” one U.S. official said. Tehran has said that it will escalate strikes against US allies in the region if Trump restarts the war.

Officials explained that Trump is considering multiple options, including hitting some of the Iranian targets that the US or Israel did not bomb during the first five weeks of the war. A second possibility is the President restarting Project Freedom.

Trump announced Project Freedom earlier this month. The operation was intended to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The President was forced to suspend the operation after its allies in the region refused to allow the US to use their airspace to assist in escorting the vessels through the Strait.

Last month, the US and Iran agreed to a short-term ceasefire to allow for talks to permanently end the conflict. However, the two sides remain far apart on key issues. The ceasefire has been extended, but multiple skirmishes have occurred.
