The Pakistani and Qatari teams leading the talks between the US and Iran said the two sides agreed to a roadmap for negotiations. Last week, Washington and Tehran agreed to a memorandum of understanding that extended the ceasefire by 60 days and opened a window for negotiations to end the war.

According to statements from Qatari and Pakistani officials, the talks between Iranian and American officials lasted 12 hours. The mediators reported that Washington and Tehran agreed to a framework for negotiations. Vice President JD Vance called the negotiations positive and said they created a “foundation” for a peace deal.

Vance also said that Tehran had agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to reenter Iran. Tehran expelled the IAEA inspectors after the US and Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities last year.

On Monday, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that the agreement with Iran will include extensive inspections of Iran’s nuclear program. “Everybody is fully aware that Iran will agree to have Major Weapons Inspections in order to ensure ‘Nuclear Honesty’ long into the future,” the President wrote.

While Trump has frequently criticized the nuclear deal reached with Iran under President Barack Obama, that agreement included intrusive IAEA inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said several achievements were made during talks. “Tireless Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end Lebanon War. Oil and petrochem exports are waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and major reconstruction & development plan launched for Iran,” he wrote on X.

He added that the first test of the negotiations will be Lebanon.

Vice President Vance said that the deconfliction mechanism will prevent violations of the truce in Lebanon from spiraling out of control. He also noted that the deconfliction committee now includes Iranian representatives.

JD’s answer to @SohrabAhmari‘s question about Lebanon is CRUCIAL:

1. Importantly, the US now says that a regional ceasefire is an AMERICAN goal and not just an Iranian demand.

2. The deconfliction mechanism in Lebanon is no longer just controlled by the US (which made it… pic.twitter.com/fIQtydaLpn

Iran has demanded that the end of the war include Lebanon. Israel has invaded Southern Lebanon and is bombing the country. Tel Aviv has refused to comply with the ceasefire.

The discussions were tested when Trump posted on Truth Social that he would bomb Iran if Tehran did not force Hezbollah to halt attacks on Israeli forces inside Lebanon. Iranian officials suggested they could walk away from talks over the threat. However, Vance claimed they had no impact on the discussions.

What we told the Iranians yesterday is, when you engage in trash talk, you can’t expect the president not to respond — JD Vance
