Leland Vittert: U.S. No Longer Shares Values With Its NATO Allies | Video

NewsNation’s Leland Vittert shared comments from Secretary of State Rubio and Vice President Vance to argue that the U.S. no longer shares values with its NATO allies or derives any benefit from remaining in the alliance.

“On this Memorial Day weekend, we remember those who gave their lives in service to the country,” Vittert said. “It’s only fitting that we think about what we are committing America’s service members to in the future.”

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio is overseas for new rounds of NATO meetings. The stakes could not be higher. We’re at a make-or-break point where we are no longer in a situation where we have shared values with our own alliance,” he said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at last week’s NATO meeting: “Any alliance has to be good for everyone who’s involved. It has to be a clear understanding of what the expectations are. And so certainly, we’ll try to lay the groundwork for that.”

“NATO was created on shared values, justifying shared sacrifices,” Vittert said. “It was born from World War II, collective defense, and standing up against evil. But we just had to go up against Iran alone, to save Israel.”

“In today’s NATO, Americans will fight and die for countries where people are arrested for flying the British flag because it offends Muslims. Police also paid visits to veterans who post anti-Muslim memes on Facebook. Those are NATO countries now.”

“This is not an issue that’s come up overnight, but one that has slowly been coming to a head over decades,” Vittert said.

Vice President Vance told the Munich Security Conference last year: “The threat that I worry the most about vis-à-vis Europe is not Russia. It’s not China. It’s not any other external actor. And what I worry about is the threat from within: the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the United States of America and Britain and across Europe. Free speech, I fear, is in retreat.”
