Abby Martin joins CN Live! to discuss her newest film, The Earth’s Greatest Enemy, about U.S. militarism, empire and environmental destruction. 8 p.m. Tonite!
There have been about 70 major empires in world history beginning with the Akkadian Empire founded by Sargon the Great in Mesopotamia 2334 BCE.
The United States Empire may well be the last.
A continuation of the British empire after breaking with London, the Americans conquered their own continent in genocide; built its early economy on slavery; seized remaining parts of the decrepit Spanish Empire and then dominated the non-communist parts of the world following the Second World War.
Since the Cold War ended, the U.S. has sought to establish total global dominance, seeking to control its two largest obstacles – falsely portrayed as threats – Russia and China.
In the process, as a global empire even greater than Britain’s, the United States has killed millions of civilians in dozens of wars since 1945, has overthrown at least 60 governments in pursuit of total world domination and has built more than 800 military bases on every continent, except Antarctica.
The Roman Empire left parts of Southern Europe permanently deforested and lead remains in soil from Roman days can still be found. The British Empire’s deforestation and soil erosion was greater and included the spread of European diseases to its colonies.
Unlike any empire before it, the United States military is not only carrying out industrial-scale killing of civilians, it is accelerating the destruction of the natural environment upon which human and animal life depend.
It is an Empire of Death never seen before. If it continues, it will be the Last Empire on earth.
