Ceasefire Day 33: Iran Responds to U.S. Proposal

Iran was reported on Sunday to have submitted its response to the latest U.S. proposal to end the Iran War, as a ceasefire to the conflict entered its 33rd day.

According to Iran’s IRNA news agency, the proposal focuses exclusively on ending the war, with broader issues to be tabled for the future. Details of Iran’s latest proposal are not yet public.

Iran’s previous demands have included lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, sanctions relief and the release of Iran’s frozen assets, the withdrawal of U.S. forces from areas surrounding Iran, and nonaggression guarantees. Tehran has also insisted that the current ceasefire covers Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani played an active role in mediating between the U.S. and Iran this weekend, meeting in the United States with Vice President J.D. Vance, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as holding a phone call with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that Israel secretly built a military base in the Iraqi desert to support its air campaign against Iran, housing special forces and launching airstrikes against Iraqi soldiers who discovered it in early March.

In a clip from an upcoming 60 Minutes interview released on Sunday to X, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that for Israel, the war with Iran “is not over,” because “there is still nuclear material, enriched uranium, that has to be taken out of Iran, enrichment sites that have to be dismantled…proxies that Iran supports, their ballistic missiles that they still want to produce,” with Netanyahu adding that “there is work to be done.”

The UAE said Sunday that its air defenses engaged ballistic missiles and drones launched from Iran.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli airstrikes killed 24 people in Lebanon on Saturday, while the IDF said Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks injured three Israeli soldiers in northern Israel.

Gas prices remained elevated on Sunday. AAA reported the national average price of gas at $4.52.
