New York Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas (D–Brooklyn) has proposed a bill that would require supermarkets and other retailers to give customers who use self-checkout a 10-percent discount. Lucas argues that shoppers are doing work once performed by cashiers, such as scanning and bagging, which saves the stores money on labor. Her proposal would give customers part of those savings in the form of a discount.
