Freddie Ponton21st Century Wire Islamabad was never a peace conference in any honest sense. It was the moment Washington tried to turn military failure into diplomatic blackmail. What it could not break with bombs, it tried to extract across a polished table. Iran answered by making clear that sovereignty defended under attack would not be converted into a concession or any form of surrender. The Islamabad talks did not fail because diplomacy ran out of time. They failed because Washington came demanding what war had not delivered, while Tehran came unwilling to sign away, in a hotel room, what it…

From Smiley v. Jenner, decided yesterday by Seventh Circuit Judge Michael Scudder, joined by Judges Candace Jackson-Akiwumi and Doris Pryor: Indiana law establishes curriculum requirements for certain schools within the state. In 2023, the state General Assembly passed Indiana House Enrolled Act 1608 [codified at Section 20-30-17-2], which added a new curriculum limitation: A school, an employee or staff member of a school, or a third party vendor used by a school to provide instruction may not provide any instruction to a student in prekindergarten through grade 3 on human sexuality. Image by Wesley Tingey. The Chinese Revolution focused its wrath—rather famously, or infamously—on the landlord class. Mao Zedong viewed agrarian land reform as a crucial jewel in the crown of his new China. Nobody should applaud the bloody excesses of the land reform program, which in an overly literal interpretation of the expression “abolish the landlord class” led to the deaths of many thousands of people accused of being landlords. But it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that, in today’s world just as surely as in the semifeudal China of the semi-recent past, there is something fundamentally broken about the…

The Supreme Court will soon offer Democrats a way around their transgender trap. Don’t expect them to take it. The Supreme Court is expected to soon render a verdict on two state laws (Idaho in 2020 and West Virginia in 2021) banning biological boys from competing in girls’ sports. The laws came before the Supreme Court after two different federal appeals courts (9th Circuit and 4th Circuit) barred the states from enforcing their prohibitions for different reasons. The 9th Circuit said Idaho’s law violated the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause because it intended “to categorically ban transgender women and girls…

Photograph Source: Ricardo Perna (AIIC) – Public Domain Depending on which historical sources you care to consult, the Pope has been a figure of obloquy, ridicule and abomination. This mediator between the terrestrial and the divine was always set for the battering. Martin Luther’s violent Protestant split from the body of the Catholic Church was merely one aspect of attacking the occupants of that office. Acrimonious disputes between the secular arm of the State and Church power have also figured. In the 11th century, Pope Gregory VII famously battled the Holy Roman Emperor King Henry IV in the Investiture Controversy over who had the power…
