Two days after three of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsed congressional candidates won their elections in the New York primaries, the NYC Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) delivered another win for the mayor. On Thursday night, the board voted 7–1 to freeze the rent for 1 million apartments in the city. The rent freeze applies to both one- and two-year leases, and prevents rent increases for more than 40 percent of apartments in the city, reports The New York Times. Those apartments that are covered by the freeze include “high-rise luxury apartments, deeply affordable subsidized units and 150-year-old walk-ups,”…
Image by Jeff Kingma. Whether it’s an addiction or an illness I’m not sure, but all too many of us and our leaders, it seems, have war fever (and a distinctly high temperature). And here’s the strangest thing: when you consider our history since World War II or look around this planet any day of the week, it seems as if all too many of our leaders simply can’t help themselves. They just (or do I mean unjust?) have to go to war. And it evidently matters not at all that the major powers on this planet can no longer…
President Donald Trump surprised members of both political parties June 24 when he abruptly canceled an event touting the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which had passed the Senate overwhelmingly — a rare bipartisan achievement on the affordability issue that is top of mind for voters. Trump posted that he would not sign the bill until passage of the SAVE America Act, which would expand requirements for proof of citizenship to vote. Democrats have criticized the SAVE America Act, saying it would disenfranchise legitimate voters, and Senate Republican leaders have said they don’t have the votes to pass it…
From J.V. v. C.H., decided June 18 by New Jersey appellate judges Lisa Rose and Patrick DeAlmeida; Carl and Jane are the court’s pseudonyms for the parties, which I’ll also use for convenience: Defendant C.H. (Carl) appeals from a … final protective order (FPO) issued against him and in favor of plaintiff J.V. (Jane) pursuant to the Victim’s Assistance and Survivor Protection Act (VASPA)…. The parties first encountered each other in February 2023, when Jane, an assistant prosecutor, was assigned to a criminal case charging F.E., Carl’s former girlfriend, with third-degree burglary and third-degree theft charges allegedly committed against Carl….…
Life seemed to be going along pretty normally when the third month of 2020 hit and all our lives, and the lives of billions around the world, were thrown into upheaval. We’ve spent the last six years trying to figure it out and so have many others. The revelations are flying fast and furious, so much that we can hardly keep up. We have meetings, groups, publications, phone calls, and share as many links and data points as we can. No matter what we do, the big story continues to be elusive. There are two reasons for this. First, the…

The governments of Israel, the United States, and Lebanon signed a framework agreement on Friday over the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the agreement, saying that it “begins to put in place a framework for lasting peace and security.” Lebanon’s ambassador to Washington, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, described the agreement as “a first step on the road to restoring Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, securing a permanent and final cessation of hostilities, enabling our people to go back to their land, and allowing all Lebanese to live in peace, security and prosperity.” Under the reported…
Over the last few months, the violence and atrocities imposed upon the Cuban people by the United States’ commander-in-chief have escalated to apocalyptic proportions. Since returning to office, Donald Trump has been choking the Cuban people by ramping up to an unprecedented degree the United States’ tremendously cruel and illegal blockade on the island. Since May 1, the US has begun to sanction foreign companies for simply maintaining economic relations with Cuba. This means international companies that are in no way linked to the US can face banking restrictions, exclusion from dollar transactions, economic retaliation, and can even have their…
