Juan Cole for Informed Comment Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg for 90 minutes as part of his attempt to widen the grounds of diplomacy toward ending the war launched by the US and Israel on February 28. Putin noted that he had received a communication from Iran’s clerical Leader, Mojtaba…
It is long past time the US eliminated gerrymandering, the drawing of district lines specifically for the purpose of favoring one political party, across the board. This requires either a 50 state agreement, or action at the federal level. This has been a problem since near the beginning of our democracy, and seems to be getting worse. We are now in the middle of a mid-decade tit-for-tat rash of gerrymandering that is extremely anti-democratic, so it’s a good time to raise this as an issue voters should definitely understand and prioritize. As a quick aside – this is not a…
In online discourse with empire apologists these past few months I’ve been told that the number of dead protesters is thirty thousand, forty thousand, fifty thousand, sixty thousand, seventy thousand, eighty thousand, ninety thousand, and a hundred thousand. Reading by Tim Foley: The most common pro-war talking point about Iran is that they massacred tens of thousands of protesters in January of this year — but what’s funny is that they never cite the same number. Because it’s a completely fictional story, they can just make up any number they want. In online discourse with empire apologists these past few months I’ve…

From Anand V. Shah & Joshua Y. Levy, Access to Justice in the Age of AI: Evidence from U.S. Federal Courts (in draft): This paper studies how generative AI has reshaped entry into the federal civil court system. Drawing on administrative records covering more than 4.5 million non-prisoner federal civil court cases from FY2005-FY2026 and 46 million PACER docket entries matched to those cases, we document three sets of findings. First, the number of pro se cases—or self-represented cases—is increasing dramatically, rising from a long-term steady-state average of 11% to 16.8% in FY2025. This increase is concentrated in case types characterized…

Kit Klarenberg Substack Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s April 13th announcement Rome will suspend a longstanding defence agreement with Israel sent shockwaves throughout Europe. Historically, Italian governments – even when led by figures who abhor Zionism – have enjoyed constructive, close ties with Tel Aviv. The pair’s security, intelligence and military apparatuses also have a long-running clandestine relationship. In fact, Mossad’s…
Image by CODEPINK. On Friday night, CODEPINK and the local University of Michigan community gathered to hold a vigil in honor of UM researcher Dr. Danhao Wan on the one-month anniversary of his death. According to reports, Dr. Wang died after jumping from an upper floor of the G.G. Brown Building on North Campus, shortly after being targeted and questioned by federal authorities. Over 30 members of the local community attended the vigil, bringing candles and flowers. They joined in a traditional Chinese bowing ceremony. During the vigil, CODEPINK and U.S. Peace Council member Bob McMurray spoke to the crowd:…

In 2024, as part of my research on the Jack Smith case, I compiled a corpus of primary sources about special counsels before Watergate. Much of this research was novel and had not been assembled before. I have now published this article in the South Texas Law Review. It is titled, “A Historical Record Of Special Counsels Before Watergate.” Here is the abstract: This Article presents a corpus of primary sources that were written by Presidents, Attorneys General, United States Attorneys, Special Counsels, and others between the 1850s and the 1950s. This corpus reproduces primary sources from more than a…
