In modern medicine, the zeitgeist today seems to be captured in one word: “more.” We need more MRI machines, more screenings, more surgical interventions, more drugs, more doctors. More. More. More. Like the internal logic of capitalism that is built on eternal growth, so too is our health care system. Given this ever-expanding demand, we need to be asking some hard questions about whether sending even more of our collective wealth towards our healthcare system is producing good returns. We might expect that anything spent on healthcare provides good returns, but what if, frequently, those investments end in losses? There…

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Strait of Hormuz must be treated as an international waterway, and Iran is not allowed to charge ships tolls or fees. “It’s an international waterway. No country is allowed to charge tolls or fees on an international waterway. That’s existing international law,” Rubio said Tuesday. The status of the Strait of Hormuz has become a major issue in negotiations to end the war. Prior to the US and Israeli attack on Iran in February, the Strait was treated as an international waterway. However, in response to the war, Tehran seized control of the…

Today was a busy day at the Court. The Justices handed down five opinions, though none were major. I’ve read Cisco, Exxon, and Pung. I’ll finish the other two later. Here, I’d like to venture authorship predictions for the outstanding cases. These guesses are worth what you paid for them. (And unlike an increasing number of tenured law professors, I do not charge a subscription fee for my blog posts.) Let’s go sitting-by-sitting. Ten cases were argued in the October sitting and all ten were decided. Justice Jackson had two opinions, and the other Justices each had one. Nine cases were argued…
Article Metrics0CrossRef Citations Media have made misinformation conversations part of daily life. We looked at nearly four decades’ worth of news stories about misinformation to see exactly what this coverage looked like. We searched five major U.S. daily newspapers for articles containing the misinformation-related terms—disinformation, misinformation, conspiracy theory, fake news, and propaganda—then extracted words in proximity to these key terms to identify associative patterns. Propaganda was the dominant term used by major newspapers prior to 2016, when term frequency and variety increased, peaking in 2020. Since 2016, newspaper usage of these terms has focused primarily on Donald Trump, Russia, social…
The United States and Iran have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, or (MOU), to end an Iran War that-when it began-Congressional Democrats widely denounced as a reprehensible and illegal "war of choice." Source link

A UN inquiry into the Israeli war against Gaza found that the IDF is targeting children. “Israeli authorities and security forces have deliberately targeted Palestinian children, resulting in genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Gaza Strip and war crimes in the West Bank,” the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian said in a report released on Tuesday. “The evidence shows that Palestinian children have been deliberately targeted and killed by the Israeli security forces,” said Srinivasan Muralidhar, Chair of the Commission. “Even after the October 2025 ceasefire, children continue to be killed and…
