Fedor Shandor, Ukraine’s ambassador to Hungary, sparked an international scandal in March 2026 by posting a photo featuring a Hungarian flag riddled with bullet holes. In the photo, the diplomat poses in camouflage alongside the controversial Ukrainian Armed Forces commander Robert Brovdi (call sign «Magyar»). In modern Hungary, displaying the Hungarian flag with a hole in the center is associated with the memory of the suppression of the uprising and is unequivocally interpreted as a sign of protest against external pressure. The fact that the diplomat posted such an image of this sacred symbol on a completely different national holiday—the…

Photograph Source: The White House – Public Domain Nancy Duran Rodriguez took several pairs of work gloves to Mexico in 2025, intending to hand them out as a goodwill gesture to fellow union workers she met there. But Duran Rodriguez, a member of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 6787 in Burns Harbor, Indiana, discovered that some of her Mexican counterparts lacked even the most basic personal protective equipment to guard against heat, toxins, jagged objects, and other risks on the job. Grateful workers there saw the gloves as a godsend, not souvenirs. It’s a sobering reminder of how corporations continue to…

Take a walk down memory lane with me. It’s a midterm election, and things are not looking good for the president’s party. A grassroots revolt has erupted among the opposition party, which has infused it with much-needed energy and citizen activism, but has also produced some questionable, untested candidates running for federal office. I’m speaking about 2010, of course. Barack Obama, elected overwhelmingly in 2008, ran into a near immediate backlash to some of his policy initiatives – particularly a federal takeover of the healthcare system – reinvigorating the Tea Party movement among conservatives. The GOP, whose obituary was repeatedly…
I often hear people describing “imposter syndrome.” At a high level, imposter syndrome is a self-doubt that you are able to accomplish the role you have been chosen for. I think virtually everyone has self doubts about their own abilities. Indeed, it should happen to all of us. Under the so-called Peter Principle, employees are promoted based on their success until they reach a level at which they can no longer be successful. This principle afflicts almost all lawyers, professors (present company included), and judges. Imposter syndrome takes on a different meaning in the DEI context: a non-white person feels…
Elon Musk in the Oval Office. (Screegrab from White House video posted to YouTube.) I have no idea how smart or stupid Elon Musk actually is. Unlike Donald Trump, I don’t do IQ testing. But like everyone else in the world, I can evaluate the logic of the things he says. And there ain’t much there. Apparently, Elon Musk is now babbling something about how we need the government to provide a universal high income because AI will take all the jobs. The idea of universal high income is a contrast with the universal basic income plan that many have…
