Photo by J. Amill Santiago I sit down to write this the morning of Memorial Day 2026, a holiday to hold in memory all who have lost their lives serving in U.S. wars. The day has its origins in memorials to Civil War veterans that started not long after the war ended. It occurs on a day when the world is on edge fearing that the next round of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran could happen any day. A broken ceasefire could have shattering global economic impacts with wholesale destruction of Persian Gulf oil infrastructure. At the same time, an…

A century ago, aviation pioneer Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell advocated for the potency of properly-applied air power. In his seminal treatise from 1925, “Winged Defense,” he wrote: “Aircraft do not need to pierce the line of either navies or armies. They can fly straight over them to the heart of a country and gain success in war.” Striking at the heart of the enemy – a concept now known as strategic interdiction – has been at the forefront of air force planning ever since. Through Mitchell’s dazzling foresight, it has been considered a decisive element of warfare, diligently described on…

The Illinois Legislature is busy advancing a bill that’s one of the most egregious examples yet of the grift between professional sports teams and state and local governments.  Under House Bill 910, projects designated as “megaprojects” would have their assessed value frozen at a base-year level, effectively shielding all new construction from property taxation for up to 45 years. Just two developments would qualify for the maximum duration under the current language: the proposed Chicago Bears stadium in Arlington Heights and the One Central mixed-use development near Soldier Field in Chicago. Rank-and-file property owners in Illinois pay the highest property…

ScheerPost Staff Retired Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson delivers a stark warning about a world he believes is rapidly slipping beyond Washington’s control. In a sweeping conversation with Glenn Diesen, Wilkerson argues that the United States is failing to adapt to the rise of a multipolar order—one increasingly shaped by China’s strategic patience, Russia’s military escalation, and the collapse of diplomatic norms that once restrained global conflict. From NATO expansion and the war in Ukraine to tensions with Iran and the erosion of trust between nuclear powers, Wilkerson paints a picture of leaders trapped in outdated imperial thinking while the geopolitical…

China’s gasoline demand is forecast to drop 5.5% in 2026, the second-steepest decline on record. The Iran conflict and subsequent oil price surge have accelerated a long-term shift away from gasoline vehicles. Chinese retail fuel prices have jumped approximately 30% since the Iran war began in late February. The International Energy Agency projects Chinese oil demand growth will slow to just 50,000 barrels per day this year. China’s rapid electric vehicle adoption and government policies are permanently reducing gasoline consumption. China’s gasoline consumption is on track to plummet 5.5% this year, marking the second-worst decline in the nation’s history, as…

Back in business: Tensions appear to be mounting again between the U.S. and Iran. Yesterday, Iran accused the U.S. of a “grave violation” after our military launched new strikes on missile sites and boats that were trying to place mines in southern Iran. U.S. Central Command characterized these actions as “self-defense”—merely an effort “to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces” but Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) disagreed: They fired at several U.S. drones and a fighter jet that entered their airspace. The two countries had been on the verge of an agreement to reopen the Strait…

Western dominance is founded on colonial plunder and can only continue with it. When you benefit from an unjust system it can be difficult to recognize you’re living in one.  It’s our job to continually point that out. A satirical political cartoon reflecting America’s imperial ambitions following quick and total victory in the Spanish American War of 1898. (Cornell University Library/Wikimedia Commons) By Joe LauriaSpecial to Consortium News Only someone living in a cave wouldn’t know by now the history of carnage and enslavement left behind by more than five centuries of Western dominance of the world. Unfortunately the West…

Photo by Allan Vega I once faced eviction in a landlord’s scam. I live in an apartment in New York City and pay my rent every month, but my landlord once refused to process my rent checks for three months and I received an eviction notice.  When I got the notice, I was freaked out and asked a friend who was a lawyer what to do. My lawyer friend said she’d go to NYC Housing Court with me to fight the eviction order.  Most surprisingly, the day before I was to report to Housing Court, my bank account showed that – mysteriously!…
