Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended U.S. military strikes on boats in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean during a Senate hearing June 2, saying the Defense Department determined the strikes’ legality and based its decisions on intelligence information. “Every strike has a legal officer on the deck that has to make a determination about whether the call is legal or not, and this is done by the Department of War, the way it’s been done in other theaters around the world,” Rubio said in response to a question from Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., about the criteria to target boats.…
I continue to find one small detail of the Slush Fund affair (Slushfundgate?) of particular interest. As you may recall, our President’s suit against the IRS was voluntarily dismissed on May 16. Two days later, on May 18, the parties executed a “Settlement Agreement.” In that Agreement, the DOJ* agrees to issue “a formal apology” to our President, and “the Attorney General of the United States agrees to create the [$1.776 billion] Anti-Weaponization Fund, subject to the terms and conditions described herein.” *The “Settlement Agreement” was signed “for the United States” by Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward. The DOJ was,…
The world is changing. The once dominant imperial power of the United States is faltering, hollowed out by corruption, over-extended by hubris, eaten away by the cancers of hatred, nationalism and greed. Even according to its own propaganda outlets, America has “become the villain”, is “Officially an Empire in Decline”, and we are witnessing its “final act”. And, as we await the titan’s inevitable fall, the world is considering the future. Everyone is talking about the “multipolar world order” just over the horizon. From “Pax Americana to Pax Multipolaris”. This “Multipolar World” has been a political talking point for a long time, but it…
Happy Tuesday, and welcome to another edition of Rent Free. This week’s lead story covers the release of the federal government’s latest homelessness survey, which reported a rare decline in the country’s homeless population. That’s welcome news that nevertheless looks a little less rosy when one examines the details. Rent Free Newsletter by Christian Britschgi. Get more of Christian’s urban regulation, development, and zoning coverage. Next up, the newsletter covers Daniel Grand, who is asking the Supreme Court to hear his First Amendment challenge to zoning laws that prevented him from hosting a Jewish prayer gathering in his own home.…
On Monday, in a New York Times op-ed, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) announced plans to introduce the American A.I. Sovereign Wealth Fund Act “in the coming weeks.” Sanders’ bill would give Americans a “direct ownership stake” in the country’s largest AI companies by creating “a sovereign wealth fund through a one-time 50 percent tax” of company stock. While specifics of the legislation haven’t been shared, Sanders says the bill will “give the public a direct role in determining the future” of AI, rather than its use being “dictated by a handful of Big Tech oligarchs.” Sanders’ proposal would also allow…

A day after Iran said that it had broken off talks with the US over Israeli ceasefire violations in Lebanon, President Donald Trump claimed that negotiations were continuing. “Fake News Reports that the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the U.S.A., stopped speaking a few days ago are false and erroneous,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Tuesday. “The conversations between us have been going on continuously, including four days ago, three days ago, two days ago, one day ago, and today.” He continues, “Where they lead, one never knows, but as I told Iran, ‘It’s time, one way or another, for…
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten is sounding the alarm about the decade-long decline in student test scores, pointing to screens and devices as a culprit. She’s calling it a “call to action.” She left out the part about how she helped cause the problem in the first place. For two years during the COVID pandemic, Weingarten and the AFT fought aggressively to keep schools closed. In July 2020, as the Trump administration urged schools to reopen, Weingarten called the push “reckless,” “callous,” and “cruel,” and threatened the possibility of safety strikes. Internal emails later released by a U.S.…
