Photograph by Nathaniel St. Clair They are a disagreeable bunch, with disagreeable ideas to match.  The querulous brats behind the drive for technological servility and plugged in stupidity were always going to scrap over which dystopian vision they most prefer.  Elon Musk thought he was onto something hounding OpenAI and its current CEO Sam Altman for supposedly betraying one of those visions.  In his $150 billion legal action, Musk alleged that Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman deceived him into investing in the company in its initial stages when salad green altruism was modish and humanity mattered.  The litigation was a prong in a broader…

Last month, the artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced a model called Mythos that can find and exploit software vulnerabilities at machine speed. The system identified thousands of previously unknown security flaws in every major operating system and every major web browser, including a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD that no human researcher had ever spotted. In the wrong hands, a tool like this could devastate American banks, hospitals, power grids, and military networks. Anthropic chose not to release Mythos publicly. The company instead selected roughly 40 trusted partners and is letting them use the model to patch software before adversaries can…

Edward Curtin Substack Without having read the details and having no intention to do so, I am still wondering if The New York’s Times’ advice for Sunday May 17, about certain six things that will add joy to my day includes links to their other advice about “What can I do about see through white pants?” and “What’s the best way…

In one of the scariest moments in modern history, we’re doing our best at ScheerPost to pierce the fog of lies that conceal it but we need some help to pay our writers and staff. Please consider a tax-deductible donation. ScheerPost Staff What began as a lawsuit over leaked tax returns is now morphing into something far bigger — and far more dangerous. In this chilling breakdown, the so-called $1.776 billion “1776 Fund” is exposed not as a normal legal settlement, but as a potentially unprecedented expansion of executive power dressed up in patriotic branding and constitutional smoke screens.…

“The post-truth era has dramatic repercussions on humanitarian work, not only because it affects NGOs’ reputation, but also because it presents a distorted vision of the reality of people in need,” says Lubiana Gosp-Server, a humanitarian and development professional. Humanitarians tackle hidden or poorly understood social issues and help people in difficult or extreme situations. All of this is threatened if people are no longer able to discern what is true or real. Despite its contemporary prevalence in public discourse, fake news is not new. Propaganda and rumors have always existed and are something that humanitarians increasingly need to manage during the course of their duties,…

Federal immigration agencies are stockpiling massive amounts of weapons and ammunition. During the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term, according to a February report from the office of Sen. Adam Schiff (D–Calif.), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) “committed to spending more than $144 million on weapons, ammunition, and related accessories.” That represents a huge increase—four times more than ICE’s 2024 contracts and double what CBP spent in 2024. The orders include thousands of rifles and handguns, more than $30 million in ammunition, and $25 million in “less-lethal” and crowd-control weapons. Both agencies “have dramatically…

Nate Bear Do Not Panic Summer music festival season is approaching (assuming the diesel is available to run the generators), and one of the artists who’ll be gracing stages across Europe and the US is Jack White. Best known as the lead singer of The White Stripes, White is a vocal anti-Trump voice in the music industry, and also extremely pro-Ukraine. White speaks and posts regularly about Ukraine, often condemning Russia and Putin, who he calls evil. On Gaza, on Palestine, on Netanyahu and on genocide however, he has had absolutely nothing to say, going so far as to methodically delete any references…
