Complaints among Democratic activists and influencers over the DNC’s decision to abort its 2024 “autopsy report” was based on a craving for two things: (1) a clear “who done it” assessment of blame for Kamala Harris’s loss to Donald Trump, and (2) a clear path forward for the party, in terms of its left-or-center ideological direction and its message to voters.   Read Full Article ⟶ Source link

Political parties that lose major elections will often create an “autopsy report.” Hoping not to make the same mistakes twice, an autopsy lets the party take stock of its failures, learn why its candidate failed to connect with voters, and get a sense of how to do better next time. But 18 months after Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election to then-former President Donald Trump, the Democratic Party only got around to releasing an autopsy this week. Even then, the party only did so as a result of public pressure, having previously sworn off the prospect of ever publicly releasing…

President Donald Trump announced Thursday on social media that the United States would be sending an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, an apparent reversal of Pentagon announcements of troop reductions to the central European country.  Secretary of War Pete Hegseth had paused deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland as a part of broader troop removals from Europe including another 5,000 from Germany.  The president cited the “successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki” as a reason for the additional troops. Nawrocki was elected last June. Subscribe Today Get daily emails in your inbox The scheduled…

Photograph Source: The White House – Public Domain During Donald Trump’s embarrassing trip to China, China’s Secretary General Xi Jinping made a speech, in which he said, “We must not be caught in the Thucydides Trap”.  It’s notable in that it places the US and China on the same level, and as facing the same danger (the Chinese expression that was translated as “we”, translated literally, becomes “America and China”, which makes it slightly clearer just who is in danger of this entrapment). And it’s a useful, if obvious,  statement that, in order to avoid this trap, these two superpowers…

Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said Thursday that the United States is pausing a $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan to preserve munitions for the Trump administration’s war with Iran. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) that Washington still has “plenty” of missiles and interceptors but is reviewing supplies for the Persian Gulf theater before foreign military sales continue. The U.S. has expended a significant portion of its munitions stockpiles, notably interceptor missiles, during the war. Previously, President Donald Trump suggested that the…

The Trump administration’s announcement that it had established a large, taxpayer-financed “Anti-Weaponization Fund” was an odd addition to an already-odd news cycle. The pool of $1,776,000,000—1776, get it?—was born out of a settlement between President Donald Trump and the IRS; the chief executive had, in some sense, sued himself after a contractor leaked his tax returns to The New York Times in 2019. Those funds will be used, the Justice Department said, “to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare.” The development has drawn widespread criticism for reasons one might assume: allegations of corruption and self-dealing.…

Origin stories are immensely important. When a dangerous and destructive force is let loose upon the earth people want to know where it came from and, most particularly, whether it was unleashed by nature or by man. During the Covid-19 pandemic it was therefore a matter of great interest and concern whether the virus that causes the Covid flu had sprung spontaneously from nature or had been leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China where scientists were doing gain-of-function research. By now for all intents and purposes that question has been settled—given the unique features of the virus and the…
