Tehran says it will suspend exchanging messages with Washington because the US is not forcing Israel to comply with the ceasefire in Lebanon. “Due to the continuation of the Zionist regime’s actions in Lebanon and given that Lebanon was one of the preconditions of the ceasefire and that this ceasefire has now been violated on all fronts, Iran’s semiofficial Tasmin news agency reported Monday. “The Iranian negotiating team will suspend ‘talks and the exchange of texts through mediators.’” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X that the ceasefire must apply to all fronts of the war and that “the…

Today the Supreme Court summarily reversed an Eleventh Circuit capital case, Whitton v. Dixon. Justice Thomas dissented, joined for the most part by Justice Alito. The Eleventh Circuit issued a 60-page decision, but the Court found objectionable two sentences. As Justice Thomas points out in his dissent, the Eleventh Circuit can simply strip out those two sentences, and the outcome would remain unchanged. This seems to be the essence of harmless error. Why, then, did the Court waste everyone’s time with a summary reversal? Justice Thomas charges his colleagues with an inconsistent approach to summary reversal. This Court has increasingly granted…
Lisa Xu Labor Notes Effective troublemakers need many skills. One of the most important, though not the most glamorous, is list-building. If you otherwise have the fundamentals of organizing in place but you’re still struggling to reach more people, make sure you’re paying attention to your list and not leaving an opportunity on the table. KEY COMPONENTS What is a list? Well, it’s a list of your co-workers. It should contain their names, of course, but also each person’s job, their department or shift, and how to get in touch with them, especially their phone number and email address. Your list should…
As the agriculture sector continues to feel the pain of President Donald Trump’s trade policies and the illegal war in Iran, Washington is bailing out cotton farmers. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the Great American Cotton Plan, a protectionist initiative to subsidize American cotton farmers. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the plan is necessary to help domestic growers who are being “crushed by rising costs, unfair foreign competition, and a flood of cheap synthetic products.” To that end, the USDA will distribute $16 million annually to cotton farmers through the Pima Agriculture Cotton Trust Fund, which…
News Desk, The Cradle. Support for Israel now viewed as ‘toxic’. Only 13 percent of Democratic voters in the US view Israel favorably, making support from the lobbying group AIPAC a liability. The pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC has begun hiding its involvement in funding political campaigns for candidates running for public office in the US, as support for Israel becomes increasingly toxic among Democratic voters, Haaretz reported on 31 May. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has traditionally boasted of its success in helping elect candidates for Congress and the Senate who are committed to supporting Israel, including voting to provide it…
A ceasefire is supposed to lower the temperature, not provide new vocabulary for the same war. We unpack reports that the U.S. bombed targets in Iran after a ceasefire and why calling it “self-defense” can still function as a direct escalation. I walk through what those strikes signal, how each side tries to define the rules midstream, and why Iran may tolerate only so many “limited” hits before choosing a bigger response. From there, we get specific about the hard constraints behind the headlines: weapons stockpiles, interceptor burn rates, and how long it can take to replace key munitions. That…

Matt Kennard shows in his new book that the bipartisan War on Terror laid the groundwork for the Trump presidency and the rise of fascism — now, with extremists empowered, we face the consequences. By Chris HedgesThe Chris Hedges Report In the United States, but also around the world, fascism is on the rise again, similar to what occurred in Germany and Italy after World War I. Its foot soldiers in the U.S. include right-wing extremists who enter the military, where they are welcomed and encouraged, for empowerment and training. The current Trump administration includes Christian Nationalists, such as Pete Hegseth…
