Some of the operating nonprofits on our list — such as the United Way and the Salvation Army — sponsor DAF programs as well, but we didn’t categorize them as sponsors because their DAF programs are tiny compared to their other fundraising. In addition, neither our list nor Forbes’ list include religious organizations, as they are not required to make their financial information public. What are DAFs, anyway? Every year, operating charities struggle harder for funds while wealthy donors pump more and more money into intermediary giving vehicles called donor-advised funds, or DAFs. And, thanks to a lack of adequate…

Some Florida Democrats are warning that a Republican plan to drastically reduce property taxes on Floridians’ primary homes isn’t as good as it seems, because it could mean losing essential local services. On June 2, the Republican-controlled Legislature voted in favor of putting Gov. Ron DeSantis’ property tax amendment on the ballot for voters to consider in the November election. The amendment needs at least 60% of the vote to become law, but whether it makes it onto the ballot is still to be determined, because it’s likely to be challenged in court first. “This proposal, if enacted, will defund…

People with disabilities are not marginal to society but central to it — and the injustices they face reveal the failures of a world that treats human dignity as subordinate to profit. Marvel Harris, Netherlands, First Swim after Rebirth, 2018. (Via Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research) By Vijay PrashadTricontinental: Institute for Social Research A few weeks ago, while I was in Bandung, Indonesia, a man who uses a wheelchair told me that the total number of people living with disabilities has been calculated by the United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO) to be 1.3 billion. People with disabilities are neither a…

In the four-second video clip from last December, an unmarked law enforcement truck with tinted windows rolls down a residential street in Memphis, Tennessee, and a voice says wryly over the truck’s loudspeaker, “Good job, Hunter.” “Hunter,” was Hunter Demster, the man who was filming, and the fact that the federal agents inside the truck knew his name made him anxious. Demster had spent the past several months following and recording the Memphis Safe Task Force, a multi-agency task force of federal and state law enforcement, and he had been facing escalating hostility and intimidation from officers. Demster would later…
Photo by Laurynas Me With many left-of-center types coming up with their plans for reforming healthcare, in the event the Democrats retake the White House in 2028, I thought I would once again throw out my free-market schemes. If nothing else, a little clear thinking should help the debate. We all know healthcare is tremendously expensive. Part of this is because it costs a lot to pay the people, doctors, nurses, technicians, and others, to provide care for patients. However, a big part of the cost is the money we pay for things, specifically drugs, and medical equipment and devices.…
The House voted Wednesday to force President Donald Trump to end the war on Iran, increasing pressure on the administration to end an increasingly unpopular war that was not authorized by Congress. The vote was the first successful passage of a war powers measure in either chamber since the conflict began more than three months ago. Four Republicans—Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania—joined Democrats in support, making the final tally of votes 215-208. Judge Newman has been “temporarily” suspended from case assignments in the Federal Circuit by her fellow judges. She has filed a cert petition with the Supreme Court. Her “stealth impeachment” raises significant issues worthy of Supreme Court review. Since all the briefing on her cert petition is now completed — and a decision on the petition is imminent — this post will briefly recap the issues, with the most important briefs linked. As I’ve blogged about previously, recall that Judge Newman has challenged her suspension from new case assignments. (Fellow bloggers Josh Blackman and Jonathan Adler have also followed the…
