On Saturday, April 18, organizers in Oakland will gather for a powerful community commemoration marking the 52nd annual Palestinian Prisoners’ Day—a global day of solidarity with Palestinians held in Israeli prisons and a renewed call for their freedom.
Hosted by Bay Area PYM, the event will take place from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Sumud Mural (401 26th St, Oakland), bringing together testimony, culture, and political education centered on the lived realities of incarceration and resistance.
Attendees will hear firsthand accounts from former Palestinian political prisoners, alongside testimonies from individuals currently on death row in the United States—drawing connections between systems of imprisonment across borders. Organizers say the program will also address Israel’s proposed death penalty law targeting Palestinian detainees, a move widely condemned by human rights advocates.
The event will feature a cultural component led by the Palestinian Youth Ensemble, highlighting songs born out of the prisoners’ struggle—music that has long served as both resistance and remembrance. A community library corner will offer reading materials, while art and cultural activities will provide space for engagement beyond the stage.
Organizers will also share ways attendees can take action through the global Freedom for Palestinian Prisoners campaign, urging continued pressure and public awareness.
“Palestinian Prisoners’ Day is not only a moment of reflection,” organizers write, “but a call to action—to expose the brutality of the occupation, demand accountability, and carry forward the struggle for dignity and liberation.”

For more on the recent conditions facing Palestinians, consider this: As the number of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons continues to rise—amid what critics describe as a “revolving door” of detention, abuse, and legal limbo—this year’s Palestinian Prisoners’ Day arrives with renewed urgency. More than a symbolic commemoration, it has become a global call to confront a system many human rights advocates say operates beyond accountability, where incarceration extends far beyond prison walls and into daily life itself. In the Bay Area, organizers are bringing that reality into focus—through testimony, culture, and collective action—demanding not only awareness, but resistance.
