President Donald Trump announced a ten-day truce between Israel and Lebanon. Israel has been attacking and occupying Lebanon since 2023.
“I just had excellent conversations with the Highly Respected President Joseph Aoun, of Lebanon, and Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel,” the President wrote on his Truth Social account Thursday. “These two Leaders have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a 10 Day CEASEFIRE at 5 P.M. EST.”
Israeli and Lebanese officials met in Washington on Tuesday. Trump said he was inviting Netanyahu and Aoun to a follow-up summit at the White House.
Israel is currently waging a war against Hezbollah in Lebanon. As Hezbollah is a non-state military, it operates outside of the control of the Lebanese President. Hezbollah has not responded to Trump’s announcement.
In a statement issued shortly before Trump revealed the truce, Hezbollah said it struck several IDF targets in Lebanon and northern Israel. The group said it would continue the attacks until Israel halts its aggression against Lebanon.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah restarted after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. In November 2024, Tel Aviv and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire. However, Israel has repeatedly violated the truce and refused to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah did not attack Israel during the ceasefire period until Israel and the US started an unprovoked war with Iran in February. The group responded to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei with heavy missile and drone salvos.
Tel Aviv has revealed its plans to ethnically cleanse and seize southern Lebanon.
Last week, Pakistan brokered a ceasefire between the US and Iran that was intended to extend to all warring parties. After the start of the truce, Tel Aviv ramped up its attacks on Lebanon.
