US Nearly Depleted Stockpile of Precision Munitions

The US military has used nearly all of its long-range, surface-to-surface missiles.

Two sources speaking with Reuters said that the Department of War has nearly depleted its stockpile of ATACMS and PrSM missiles. A separate source said that Central Command (CENTCOM) had used its entire stockpile of land-launched missiles and had to bring in supplies from other commands.

The US has provided some ATACMS missiles to Ukraine.

Tuesday’s report is the first discussing the low levels of surface-to-surface munitions. However, multiple outlets have reported shortages of other munitions, including long-range cruise missiles and advanced interceptors.

The US has relied on long-range weapons against Iran rather than using manned aircraft to drop bombs on the country. Using fighter jets comes with more risk as it exposes the aircraft to Iranian air defenses.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates it will take four years or more to replenish the stockpiles of interceptors and munitions used during the first six weeks of the war.

Some officials in the White House are concerned that continuing the war against Iran will deplete US stockpiles to a level that will impact the ability to confront Russia and China.
