President Donald Trump’s war against Iran has slipped to its lowest approval yet. The poll comes after the collapse of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and ceasefire.

A Reuters poll released on Tuesday found that just 33% of Americans approve of the war against Iran, while over 60% disapprove of the conflict. Disapproval of the war may stem from Americans being unclear about the reasons for the conflict. Nearly 70 percent of Americans told Reuters they think President Trump has not “clearly explained the goals of US military involvement in Iran.”

Trump and top US military officials have offered a myriad of reasons for starting a war against Iran. Among the stated goals of the conflict are: eliminating Iran’s nuclear program, seizing Tehran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, dismantling Iran’s missile capabilities, taking control over the Strait of Hormuz, severing Iran’s ties with its allies, and regime change.

Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress after the start of the war that Israel was planning to attack Iran, and top US officials assessed that Tehran would respond with attacks on American bases in the region. Rather than pressuring Tel Aviv to call off the attack, Washington joined the war.

The falling approval for the war comes after the collapse of the MOU and truce. In June, Trump signed a document with Iran that established a ceasefire and laid out the framework for negotiations to end the war. However, Washington and Tel Aviv refused to honor their commitments under the MOU, prompting Tehran to break the ceasefire.

Earlier this month, a Big Data Poll asked Americans if they support the MOU with Iran; 62% of likely American voters said “yes,” compared to just 24% who opposed the deal.
