Megyn Kelly and “The Federalist” co-founder Sean Davis discuss Charlie Kirk and the dangerous climate of political violence that conservative public figures face.
We cover crime. And this one is just, it just has so many different layers to it. Because it was our friend.
It was Charlie. Everyone knew him. Even the audience listening now felt very much like they knew him.
He was a regular guest on this program. And it is tough to get immediately past questions like, why wasn’t the roof patrolled? Not to take anything away from the actual killer.
But it’s just, you know, conservatives are being killed. And they’re being threatened. And these crazy leftists are celebrating it.
And you think about the next one and the next one after that. And this assassination culture that’s taking too many of ours. And, you know, you don’t want to see it take anybody.
But how we shore up the protection around our public figures like Charlie, who was literally irreplaceable, is obviously on the mind of many. So your thoughts on all of it?
SEAN DAVIS, THE FEDERALIST CO-FOUNDER:: Yeah, and I’m so glad you brought that up, because I feel like it’s gotten lost in a lot of the, you know, examining all the details in the trial and everything. Sohrab [Ahmari] and I were talking about this off camera before the show. And, you know, talking about threats we have to deal with.
And to me, it’s absolutely unconscionable. And it’s not talked about nearly enough that if you are a Christian, if you’re a conservative or a Republican, you walk out your door every day, wondering if someone’s going to try and kill you. You walk out the door every day, you go to an event, and you wonder if someone’s going to try and kill you and kill your family.
You talked about it yourself. You have a security team. We all have security teams. We all have to be thinking through every last little thing. We have to micromanage every aspect of our security. We have to start asking questions that no one should have to ask about security at hotels or conferences or things like that.
I never hear this conversation among people on the left anymore. They are not walking around worrying if somebody who’s hopped up on hormones and trans surgery is going to try and kill them. This seems to be a threat that is completely isolated to those of us on the right. And thank you for bringing it up, because it’s totally unacceptable, and yet it’s been utterly normalized. I don’t know how we get back from it.
But you talked about Butler.They tried to kill Trump. They killed Charlie. Instead of everyone getting together after that and saying, hey, we have a real problem with political violence on the left in this country, everyone’s devolved down into conspiracy theories on the far right. “Oh, Tyler didn’t do it. This country did it.” Meanwhile, on the left, they tell us that, “Oh, actually, it was a right-winger who did it, and it’s good that it happened.”
This is a horrible environment that we are in politically right now, where these are the terms of conversation and these are the things we’re talking about. It’s an utter tragedy. What I find so frustrating and disheartening is I don’t know where we go from here. I don’t know how we get back to where we can just disagree over things without wishing everyone who disagreed with us got killed or is dead.
