Sunday Funnies: Bake-A-Touille

When I was a kid in the eighties, ‘global warming’ was a fringe topic only reported by people like Jaime Maussan (back when he tried to be a respectable reported working for the Mexican version of Sixty Minutes). Michael Chrichton’s last novel, State of Fear, criticized the supposed ‘fear-mongering’ tactics and anti-scientific information that environmental groups employed in order to raise a global conscience about the dangers of a warmer planet.

It’s 2026, and Chrichton would’ve been forced to eat a whole lot of crow, alongside his words. Global warming is not something that’s gonna affect your great-grandchildren; it’s already here, and people in the richest countries of the west are finally experiencing the suffering of poorer countries, closer to the Equator, who were among the first to experience the climate changes caused by greenhouse gases we’ve been criminally been dumping into the atmosphere, as if there was a plan(et) B we can resort to—there isn’t.

The inspiration for this strip came when I watched a clip from a guy in Paris who was able to cook some eggs, by simply leaving his pan outside on the rooftop for four minutes.

I’ve never been in Paris (chances are I never will). My experience from that city comes from movies like Ratatouille, which is one of my favorite Pixar movies. Cooking + record heat got mixed into my brain, and Voilá: you’ve got yourself a baked rat. Bon Appetit!

Stay safe from the heatwave while it last, and after it ends do NOT forget about it or pretend it didn’t happen. Because next year it will be worse, unless we start doing something in order to cope with this extinction-level problem we brought upon ourselves.
